Victoria Monét Takes Us Back to the Early 2000s in Music Video for “On My Mama”

Before the August 25 release of Jaguar II, the highly-anticipated prequel to Victoria Monét’s 2020 album Jaguar, the singer/songwriter unveiled the music video for her latest single, “On My Mama”. The D’Mile, Deputy and Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman produced song dropped June 16 about a week before Monét announced Jaguar II. The “I Look Good” sampled track’s music video was released on August 15 and is stacked with early 2000s Hip-Hop culture references fitting for a 106 & Park debut.

The music video directed by Child pays homage to the Y2K era and Black culture with so much detail that you may have to watch it more than once to catch all of the Easter eggs. Those that grew up in the early 2000s will have a great appreciation for how wardrobe stylist Kollin Carter dressed Monét and her dancers in white tees, Girbaud jeans, durags, and jersey dresses as they smoothly executed dances like the Poole Palace, Walk It Out, and Whoop Rico choreographed by Sean Bankhead. The “On My Mama” visual features appearances by Monét’s mama, 2-year-old daughter Hazel, and the “I Look Good” rapper, Charlie Boy.

In a statement about the hit single, Monét says,

“‘On My Mama’ is the soundtrack to positive affirmations. I wrote it postpartum when I wasn’t feeling my best, but spoke to how I wanted to feel. Singing the lyrics about yourself will change your frequency, and elevate a positive mental state. The words speak not only to physical features, but to a feeling too because I believe when you feel good you look even better! Give yourself the words you need to hear because it’s true, you look good! There’s no one like you and that’s on ya mama. Enjoy being yourself witcha fine ass!”
