Drake and SZA’s first-ever collaboration “Slime You Out” dropped on September 15 ahead of Drake’s eighth studio album For All the Dogs which is set to be released October 6.
Before the release of the Drake, Noah “40” Shebib, Bnyx, Noel Cadastre, and Dalton Tennant produced track, Drizzy posted a photo of Halle Berry being slimed at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, tagging SZA in the photo which she then reposted. Although Halle Berry wasn’t happy about her photo being used to tease the song stating on Instagram that the Canadian rapper/singer didn’t get her permission, it was a very clever way to promote the track. In the song Drake sings, “I’m slimin’ you for them kid choices you made.”
This may be their first collab but the two stars have a history. In 2020, Drake was featured on 21 Savage’s “Mr. Right Now” where he mentions he and SZA’s past for the first time, rapping “Yeah, said she wanna fuck to some SZA, wait / ‘Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08,” which SZA confirmed on Twitter stating, “So it was actually 2009.”
In her Rolling Stone cover story published on Tuesday, SZA spoke about her and Drake’s fling stating that the pair “were really young,” and that “It wasn’t hot and heavy or anything. It was like youth vibes. It was so childish.” The Top Dawg Entertainment artist turned 18 in November 2008. “I just didn’t want anybody thinking anything underage or creepy was happening. Completely innocent. Lifetimes ago,” SZA commented in a response to her original Tweet.
On “Slime You Out” the duo go back-and-forth seemingly playing on their past, “You ain’t ’bout the shit you rappin’ about,” SZA sings, while Drake responds with “Sayin’ that I’m too guarded ’bout my feelings, who the fuck even asked you?”
During the Austin, TX stop on his current U.S. tour with co-headliner 21 Savage is when Drake announced he’d be dropping a single from his new upcoming album. “I know y’all excited to hear the album. I know it’s, like two weeks out. I’ma drop a song for y’all this week. Yeah, yeah. What a time, what a time.” Drake also hinted at a potential feature with Nicki Minaj during the Detroit stop on the “It’s All a Blur Tour” saying, “Me and Nicki Minaj did our first song together in, like, a really long time. I got a lot of love for her.”
