‘The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder’—Trailers, Cast, and Release Date

Penny Proud and the fam are back and they’re louder and prouder!

90s babies are you ready for this!? The 2001 Disney Channel classic The Proud Family is back! Yep, that’s right the Disney animation series that centers around the life of fourteen year old Penny Proud (Kyla Pratt) as she navigates her way through being a teen with the help of her family and friends is being picked up where it left off February 23, 2022 on Disney Plus.

The first official trailer for The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder was released November 12, 2021.

The Proud Family was and is important because its one of the few cartoons that depicts the life of an African-American family and people of color in general. It gave people who wouldn’t otherwise see themselves and their families portrayed on television in a completely positive light with educational and encouraging messages.

Disney Plus released a second trailer that shows more of the Proud’s usual antics just as we remember. The plot-line for the revival on the Disney Plus website reads:

“A continuation of the acclaimed series, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouderfollows the adventures and misadventures of newly 14-year-old Penny Proud and her Proud Family as they navigate modern life with hilarity and heart. The 2020s brings new career highs for mom Trudy, wilder dreams for dad Oscar and new challenges for Penny, including a socially woke neighbor who thinks she has a lot to teach her, bullying social media influencers who want to cancel her and her own teenage hormones. Penny’s friends return, including Dijonay, LaCienega, Zoey and Michael. Penny’s Suga Mama also returns, ready as ever to dispense tough love or a gentle hand whenever Penny needs it. Among the new faces are Maya and KG, new kids who not only have to deal with the struggles of being the new kid but also having two dads, a first for Smithville.”

Majority of the original cast are returning for the reboot including the voices of Penny, Oscar, Trudy, and Suga Mama. There’s also lots of new characters voiced by your favorite celebrities. The full cast list is below.

Kyla Pratt will be returning as the voice of Penny Proud. Pratt was just 14 years old at the time of the original Proud Family in 2001.
Tommy Davidson will be returning as Penny Proud’s dad and inventor of Proud Snacks, Oscar Proud.
Paula Jai Parker is returning as Penny Proud’s mother and veterinarian, Trudy Proud.
Penny Proud’s grandmother Suga Mama will be portrayed by original voice actor Jo Marie Payton.
Voicing Penny’s uncle Bobby Proud is original voice actor Cedric The Entertainer.
Tara Strong the original voice actor for Penny’s baby brother and sister Bebe and Cece Proud will be returning.
Penny’s friends will be reprising their roles minus Sticky. Karen Malina White is returning as Dijonay Jones, Soleil Moon Frye as Zoey Howzer, and Alisa Reyes as LaCienega Boulevardez.
The original voice actors for the Boulevardez family are back with Maria Canals-Barrera as LaCienega’s mother Sunset Boulevardez, Carlos Mencia as LaCienega’s father Felix Boulevardez, and Alvaro Gutierrez as Papi.
Also returning from the original cast is Raquel Lee Bolleau as Nubia Gross of the Gross sisters and Marcus T. Paulk as Penny’s classmate Myron Lewinski.
Billy Porter and Zachary Quinto will be voicing new characters Randall and Barry Leibowitz-Jenkins, the interracial adoptive parents of Maya and Francis.
Voicing teen activist Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins is Keke Palmer and voicing her brother Francis a.k.a KG is rapper A Boogie wit da Hoodie. This will be the rapper’s first role.
EJ Johnson will be voicing a reimagined Michael Collins who was originally voiced by Phil Lamarr.

Artists like Lizzo, Lil Nas X, Jaden Smith, Chance the Rapper, and Normani will be making guest appearances as well as actors Gabrielle Union, Lena Waithe, Tiffany Hadish, and Marsai Martin. Guests who appeared in the original like Tina Knowles and Al Roker will also be returning for the revival.
