‘The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri Joins ‘Abbott Elementary’ as Janine’s Sister

Best known for her role as Sydney Adamu on FX’s hit-series The Bear, Ayo Edebiri has now scored a guest-star role on the Emmy-winning comedy series Abbott Elementary. On Wednesday February 8, The Bear breakout star portrayed Ayesha Teagues, sister to series creator Quinta Brunson’s Janine Teagues.

Janine has mentioned her sister throughout the show often speaking of their complicated relationship. In Wednesday’s episode, “Valentine’s Day,” Jacob walks into Janine’s classroom as she’s preparing herself to call Ayesha to wish her a happy birthday. Janine warns Jacob of her sisters’ intense personality, describing her as “over the top”, having “kind of no self-awareness”, and “nosey”. During the FaceTime call Janine creates problems where there are none while Jacob looks at the camera in confusion. You can watch the scene here.

Although Edebiri’s appearance was brief she will be returning later on this season with a larger storyline.

Edebiri has received acting nominations from Critics’ Choice, the Indie Spirits, the Gotham Awards and the Screen Actors Guild for her role in The Bear. But, what you may not have known is that Edebiri began her career as a writer on Apple TV’s Dickinson and FX’s What We Do in the Shadows. She transitioned to onscreen as Hattie in Dickinson. She also has writing credits on Netflix’s Big Mouth, where she has recently replaced Jenny Slate as the voice of Missy. Next, Edebiri will appear in marvel’s upcoming movie Thunderbolts.
