Discovering: Channing Green

“I want my music to say it’s okay to get lost in time traveling to a place filled with moments of drifting into daydreams and finding peace while enjoying every moment of it” – Channing Green

Discover Channing Green as we talk his new single, Chris Brown, and what keeps him motivated.

This week’s Discovering artist is 26 year old R&B artist Channing Green. Growing up in Los Angeles, California, Green developed a love for music at a very young age. But, it was when Chris Brown performed his breakout hit “Run It” on BET’s 106 & Park that Green knew being a performing artist is what he had to do. When I asked Green who his dream collaborations were inevitably he named Chris Brown as one of them. You can hear Brown’s influence in Green’s music, that new school R&B with a touch of influence from the 90s classics which makes sense being that Green listed 90s R&B artists Tevin Campbell, Boyz 2 Men, Usher, and Blackstreet as his favorite artists growing up.

In 2019, Green released his first project titled H.B.S. which Green explains the meaning of and the inspiration in the interview. From H.B.S. to his 2020 single “The Hills” to his 2021 singles “Freaky” featuring THGRT XCAPE and “Karmasutra” to his new 2022 single “Brown Eyes”, you can hear Green’s growth as an artist.

Green moved from his hometown of LA to “Black Hollywood”, Atlanta, Georgia where Green says he’s been soaking in all of the Black excellence and beauty. He shows his appreciation for that Black excellence and beauty in “Brown Eyes” which he dropped this year on January 31st. In the interview Green tells us the process in creating the new single, “I actually got inspiration from not only wanting to show more appreciation to black women and women of color, but in particular that day I had met this beautiful black woman and fell in love with her big brown eyes…”

Channing Green is making the R&B that we need and his work ethic doesn’t go unseen. If you follow Green on Instagram you’ll see that he’s always making music and sharing it with his followers, asking them what their opinions are and which songs he should drop next. It’s evident that music is his passion. Green tells us, “Music not only was my first love but it’s the thing I’m most passionate about, I want the world to hear my voice and visualize my vision in every record I create. I’m a visionary, I’m ahead of my time, I’m the next artist of the decade. I want the world to get the chance to hear me so they can see it for themselves. People always ask me ‘Channing, where do you see yourself in 10 years?’, my response has been the same lately, I see myself mentioned with the greats.” I believe him and so should you, just listen for yourself.

Everything GOOD: When did you start making music?

Channing Green: I started making music at like 10 or 11 years old the day I seen Chris brown on 106 and Park performing “Run It”. That was the first time I saw a real star and became inspired immediately.

EG: What was the process in creating your new song Brown Eyes?

CG: I actually got inspiration from not only wanting to show more appreciation to black women and women of color, but in particular that day I had met this beautiful black woman and fell in love with her big brown eyes I mean hers were something special the kind you couldn’t say no to.

EG: Let’s go back to 2019 when you released your first project H.B.S. What does H.B.S. stand for and what was the vision for the project?

CG: Wow 2019 what a crazy time in my life haha, H.B.S. stands for “Heart Break Summers“. The whole vision was to create something based off my life that summer. There were a bunch of Hot Girls/ City Girls breaking hearts that summer they had me feeling like me and the guys couldn’t catch a break aha.

EG: Who were your favorite artists growing up and who are your favorite artists right now?

CG: My favorite artists growing up we’re definitely Michael Jackson, Otis Redding, Tevin Cambell, Bill Withers, Al Green, Usher, Chris Brown and even groups like Boyz 2 Men and Blackstreet. My favorite artists now are Chris Brown, Drake, Bryson Tiller, Partynextdoor, and Don Toliver.

EG: Who is your dream collaboration?

CG: My Dream collab would be Chris Brown or Partynextdoor it’s their style, it’s just so authentic the word play for party and and the vocals for Brown.

EG: If you had to use 4 words to describe yourself as an artist what would they be?

CG: Soulful, Unique, Harmonious, and Electrifying.

EG: What do you want your music to say to its listeners?

CG: I want my music to say it’s okay to get lost in time traveling to a place filled with moments of drifting into daydreams and finding peace while enjoying every moment of it.

EG: Let’s do some manifesting! Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

CG: I see myself on tour, getting my first Grammy, working with the best in the game, and being a voice for the youth.

EG: What keeps you motivated to continue chasing your dreams?

CG: That moment you make something special you get this feeling of joy and excitement that moment where the voice in your head tells you that you have something special the world needs to hear and see.

EG: When can we expect new music from Channing Green?

CG: I’ll be releasing my first E.P. soon titled “what should have been”. It’s focused around relationships, the problems we face and the love we create.
