“BBHMM” is not the song fans speculated Rihanna would open up the Super Bowl LVII halftime show with. “Pon De Replay”, “Don’t Stop the Music”, and “Run This Town” are the songs majority of the internet picked as potential openers but, only “Run This Town” was performed out of the three. At an Apple Music conference a few days prior to the Super Bowl Rihanna spoke about how difficult creating the set list was, “There are probably about 39 versions of the setlist right now,” she told the interviewer, Nadeska Alexis. The version that she went with was a medley of her greatest hits following the opener that included “Where Have You Been?”, “Only Girl”, “Work”, “Rude Boy”, “Umbrella”, ending with “Diamonds”.
Rihanna’s halftime show has been receiving backlash with some viewers calling her performance low energy while others have been defending the Fenty Beauty moguls performance on behalf of her pregnancy. Not to mention this was Rihanna’s first performance in 7 years. Rihanna debuted her baby bump in a snug red catsuit with sculpted corset and flight suit by Loewe. At first you may not have noticed the singers’ bump, some fans thought it was just her postpartum body but, as the show went on it become incredibly obvious that this was the big reveal.
The disappointing thing about Rihanna’s halftime show wasn’t her performance. Rihanna’s performance was what you’d expect from her, smooth and relaxed. Some fans wanted more from Rihanna but she gave us…her and she sounded the best she ever has…the mic was ON, okay. What was disappointing was there was no surprise new single. Now, with the new pregnancy there could be an additional delay for her highly anticipated 9th studio album “R9”. As to what we can expect from Rih Rih’s new music that is coming…eventually she says we can expect something weird. “Musically I’m feeling open,” she said at the press conference. “I’m feeling open to exploring, discovering, creating things that are new, things that are different, things that are off, weird. Might not ever make sense to my fans… I want to have fun with music,” she continued.
