The White Lotus and Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney is teaming up with Sony Pictures to bring us a remake of Barbarella. Sweeney is not only set to star in the film but she’s expected to executive produce as well. Although, Sweeney doesn’t have any official producer credits yet they’ve been in the making since launching her production company Fifty-Fifty Films in 2020. Sweeney signed on to co-produce another Sony project through her production company, an adaptation of Madison Lawson’s novel The Registration. Sony has been keeping Sweeney very busy with Madame Web being another Sony project she’ll be starring in. The Emmy nominee will also be producing through Fifty-Fifty Films and starring in an HBO Max series The Players Table opposite Halsey as well as a Universal Pictures adaptation of Marcus Kliewer’s short story The Caretaker. Sweeney and Halsey are also co-starring in Bron Studio film National Anthem.
The Jane Fonda led film Barbarella based on Jean-Claude Forest’s French comic book series released in 1968 and was directed by Fonda’s then husband Roger Vadim. Barbarella follows an astronaut from the 41st century on her way to stop an evil scientist. The film became a cult classic for its aesthetically pleasing promo images, costumes, and well, Jane Fonda.
The Barbarella remake is in early development with no writer or director attached.
